BJP's Piyush Kanodia wins after 28 hours of counting from Rajarhat Newtown by 309 votes; Party's tally rises to 207

In one of the most closely contested battles of the Bengal assembly elections, BJP’s Piyush Kanodia emerged victorious in the Rajarhat New Town seat. The counting process, which stretched over a grueling 28 hours, kept both parties on edge until the final round. Kanodia secured 106,564 votes, narrowly surpassing TMC’s heavyweight candidate Tapas Chatterjee in a classic photo finish.

The margin of victory was razor-thin, with Kanodia leading by just 309 votes. Tapas Chatterjee, who polled 106,255 votes, lost his grip on the seat in the final moments of the counting. This win marks a significant shift in the local political landscape, highlighting the intense polarization and the high stakes involved in this constituency.

With this crucial win, the BJP has further solidified its position in the state, taking its total tally to 207 seats. Conversely, the defeat has seen the TMC’s numbers reduced to 80 seats. The victory in Rajarhat New Town is being seen as a major morale booster for the saffron camp, given the strategic importance of the urban seat.
